Lexi Arielle Photography: A Southern Styled Wedding Shoot

Posted by Lacey Wilcox on 11th May 2014

Your wedding day is one of the most exciting times in your life. We know there are a thousand things you could worry about as you walk into the next chapter of your life, but nothing is as important as the memories surrounding that special occasion. You want your wedding to be a reflection of your style and your love.

This styled wedding shares a warmth and casual, Southern style in a sweet outdoor ceremony. The look is light, simple, and charming. The natural setting is a perfect backdrop for two people who are comfortable and confident in their love. The stylist chose our Jamestown wooden lapel to adorn the groom for this beautiful outdoor ceremony. The Jamestown lapel flower works as good as it looks. Here, our lapel flower plays southern casual, and we think you’d agree: it’s as dapper as it is timeless.

Crafted from high-quality Walnut, the Jamestown wooden lapel flower is a unique and innovative piece. Its light grey center coordinates with a variety of color palettes and styles. For this styled wedding shoot, the artists involved paired the Jamestown lapel flower with a navy sport coat, denim shirt, and floral bow tie. It’s classic, but dashing, and the perfect groom’s attire for an outdoor wedding.

All of our wooden bow ties and lapel flowers are crafted from the finest hardwoods and quality fabrics, meaning they’ll be around for many years. They make the perfect gift for any groom or groomsman who possesses distinguished style, and will be around and wearable long after a traditional boutonnière. Just like the love you celebrate, they’re timeless.

Hardwood Feature: Walnut

Posted by Lacey Wilcox on 19th Jan 2015

Walnut has long been a favorite wood for crafting. Anyone who works with it can attest to its strength, durability, and natural beauty. It’s a mainly straight grained wood with an occasional wave in the grain. Its occasional wavy grain is one of its defining characteristics. Those are some characteristics we feel are equally important to personal style—straight-laced with a flair of the irregular. Just like our handcrafted wooden bowties, those irregularities provide a punch of style without ever being over-done.

Walnut wood is rich with different shades of red and brown throughout. It makes a perfect wood to be paired with all your button-up oxfords and a navy blazer will surely bring out a myriad of earth toned hues. A hand-crafted walnut bow tie or lapel flower will be your wardrobe workhorse. It can dress your look up or down depending on the hour. It’ll say experienced and bold at the office, while leaving you looking natural and inviting for happy hour. Walnut is nothing if not a workable wood. It sands, it paints, and it lacquers and lusters. It does it all… and makes it look easy.

Walnut is one of those woods that grows more lustrous with age too. So instead of looking like a beat-down, dried up, cracked and repaired piece of work, anything made from walnut ages and starts to look pretty savvy, experienced, and unafraid of the road ahead. It’s that board room cool you’re going to need for your next presentation or pitch. A walnut piece from Two Guys Bow Ties is going to make you the guy everyone comes to for answers. We don’t really know what you’re supposed to tell everyone at that point, but we’ve always been fans of “fake it until you make it”. Trust us, with the Cleveland Bow Tie or Oakland Lapel Flower, no one’s going think you’re faking it.

They’re going to say, “Yes, sir. Anything else, sir?”

Then you’re going to say, “No, that’ll be all… for now.”

Another great thing about walnut, besides workability and aged beauty, is its ability to have fun. Take a look at Marion here, above. He looks fun, right? That’s because walnut is a tough hardwood of medium density. He’s smart, but not astrophysicist smart. He’s not overly dense in that way, you know, the way where he’s debunking Interstellar the whole time you’re watching it? Then again, he’s not so dense the other way either—the way in which some hate craft beer and only drink Natty Light. He’s a real nice hardwood of medium density; equal parts smart and down to earth; equal parts wine and cheese as wings and beer. Walnut is a very flexible wood with low stiffness and it can be bent with steam better than many other woods to match any application. That’s one of the great things about medium density hardwoods—they can be whatever you need them to be.

Trust us, if you’re looking for a more versatile, workable wood you won’t find it outside of walnut. If you’re looking for a more elegant wearing wood with age, you won’t find it. If you’re looking for a more dense, on either side of the spectrum, wood; you’ll find it, but a spontaneous fellow like yourself may not want all the inherent constraints it’s sure to come with.

Check out our full-line of walnut crafted, handmade, hardwood accessories today.

A Look Back at 2015

Posted by Two Guys Bow Ties on 8th Jan 2016

This past year was full of new adventures and incredible opportunities. In March of 2015, we moved from a warehouse in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma to our very first store-front location. Not only are we now able to have our shop located in Downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma, but we’re also able to keep our entire wood-shop, making and shipping areas, and offices all in the same building. It was quite the renovation and move-in process, but we’re finally getting to the point it looks like Two Guys when you walk through the front door. Take a look at the transformation with us below.

Then in July we auditioned for the ABC hit show, Shark Tank. Our episode aired on October 9th, and it was finally at that point we could announce our partnership with the highly reputable fashion mogul, Daymond John.

The amount of support from you all that we received across the U.S. was overwhelming and we could not have been more grateful.

img-4010   img-5002

Needless to say, it’s been quite the ride. And it’s because of your positive feedback and constant support that we get to spend each and every day doing what we are passionate about. So, as simple and insignificant as this may sound in comparison to all you’ve been for us, thank you. We couldn’t have made this a reality without you.

So, Cheers to the adventures of another year! We’re pretty confident you’ll like what we have in store for you guys.

Beard Care Essentials

Posted on 18th Nov 2014

No Shave November is officially here, in all its bearded glory. In partnership with the American Cancer Society, No Shave November works to promote cancer awareness and help raise funds towards research and support. For the month of November, gents across the country skip their morning shave, giving free reign to their facial hair, and donate to a charity of their choice. The result is more awareness for cancer, support raised for patients and their families, and a plethora of distinguished dudes with potential bragging rights on their beards.

The key to pulling off any beard (whatever style you might choose) is in the grooming. It’s easy to tell with just one glance to tell the difference between a well-maintained beard and one that still needs some work. We’d hate to see any of you looking dapper and dashing in one of our wooden bow ties and lapel flowers and then spoil your look with a messy beard. To save you from a facial hair disaster, we’re sharing some basic tips for keeping your beard clean and distinguished.

Trimming and Maintenance When trimming your beard, you can either do it yourself, or find a barber you trust. If you go the barber route, look for gentlemen with a beard you wish to emulate. Ask around to see if they trim their own, or have it done. If they use a barber, ask for other details: how often they go, if they give any specific instructions, etc.

If you choose to trim your beard yourself, you’ll want to invest in a good pair of scissors that come to a narrow point, and a good quality beard trimmer if you prefer a shorter style.

Choosing a Beard Comb A good beard comb helps to keep your beard in a neat and orderly fashion. While there are many plastic contraptions out there that can “technically” be considered a beard comb, such a fine display of facial hair deserves a little more love than $2, don’t you think?

The downside to plastic is that is can often cause static. Few of them are designed with comfort and quality in mind. A wooden beard comb, however, is a display of craftsmanship, quality, and comfort (often in a size that will fit inside your pocket). Because it is made from wood as opposed to plastic, it also won’t generate any static.

Conditioning with Beard Oil Grow a beard for a long enough time, and you’ll soon run into a problem: itching. As you’re first growing a beard, your skin will itch considerably as the hairs come through and grow. Once your beard is longer, you’re still likely to experience some dry skin that can lead to itching. Beard oil serves a multitude of purposes: when used daily, it keeps your skin soft (and less prone to driving you crazy), it helps to prevent flakes that can arise, and it keeps your beards conditioned and free from flyaways. When choosing a beard oil, always reach for quality over cost-effectiveness. Cheaper beard oils are likely to contain substances that aren’t exactly good for your face (or the rest of you). Look for one made from all natural ingredients and that contains essential oils. Not only do they smell great, they also contain properties that are good for your beard and face.

Because we want to see you looking as dapper as possible from the chin down and the shoulders up, we’ve created our own line of beard care products. Handcrafted wooden beard combs and our unique blend of beard oils. We’re excited to launch this new line of products tomorrow, so make sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to be the first to know when they go on sale.

Daniella + Ross: A Colorful Palm Springs Wedding

Posted by Lacey Wilcox on 11th Jun 2014

Daniella and Ross’ Palm Springs wedding may be one of the most beautiful you have ever seen. Set at the Parker, this Palm Spring, CA wedding is full of colorful, character, and the perfect mix of the couple’s personality and style. We loved getting to see one of our wooden bow ties featured in the mix.

gws-wedding-6

For their big day, Daniella and Ross knew they wanted their wedding to really reflect their specific tastes and Ross’s Native American heritage. As Daniella was beginning to plan for their wedding, she knew that the Parker was her dream backdrop for her colorful wedding day, and she knew that she wanted the color palette of her wedding to tie in with her wedding shoes.

gws-wedding-4

With these things in mind, Daniella and Ross worked with their wedding coordinators to create a day that was funky, colorful, and full of life and beauty. The vivid colors give testament to their energy, and the flowers display the beauty of their natural surroundings. The result is funky, beautiful, and full of life.

The couple’s choice in wedding attire shows clearly how trendy they are. The bride wore a beautiful, simple dress with the bright colored shoes that set the tone for the whole wedding. The groom wore a blue suit, polka dot socks, blue suede shoes, and our Ira wooden bow tie. The Ira was the perfect compliment to the blue background of the groom’s attire and to tie in with the abundance of florals and greenery.

5 Reasons to Wear Wooden Accessories on Your Wedding Day

Posted by Two Guys Bow Ties on 22nd Jan 2016

(Photos by: Coralee Stone Photography – check out their work here.

1. They’re unique.

The most obvious reason is simply how unique they are. Couples everywhere are always looking for something special or new to set apart their wedding day in a personal way. What better way to do that than with high quality, handcrafted accessories for the groom, his groomsmen, and the handsome ring bearer, of course.

2. They can be custom-made.

The second reason is something we all love but have a hard time finding: the ability to customize your accessories to perfectly compliment your wedding style or color palette. At Two Guys Bow Tie Co., we have a wide variety of wood types, designs, and centerpieces to provide a world of possibilities. We also give our customers the option to send in their fabric of choice for us to use in making both the lapel flowers and bow ties. This option is extremely popular as it allows the couple to choose exactly what they want and allow our design team to help decide the perfect wood type to match both the fabric and your desired look.

Several of the wood types include: Sapele, Walnut, Maple, White Oak, Padauk, Wenge, Rosewood, Bocote, Zebrawood, Lacewood, Purple Heart, and more. We also have a large quantity of custom fabric that isn’t on our website but have available for your use. Just send us an email at: [email protected], let us know what color scheme you’re looking at, and we can send you photos of what we already have before you go shopping for your own!

3. They have sentimental value.

One of our favorite things about the accessories we make, especially the wooden bowties, is how easily it becomes a sentimental piece that can be passed down through the family. For only $10 extra, you can have a custom message engraved on the back of the tie. Some popular engravings include one or more of these: the wedding date, the person’s name or initials, their title in the wedding, a personal note, an inside joke, a nickname, bible verse, or song lyrics. We also can do front etchings for an additional expense, or engrave handwritten notes as well. Some examples we’ve done in the past are: “Marry you, why wooden tie?” and “I love you” written in the handwriting of a loved one. Unlike fabric only accessories that fade and become dirty or faded over time, our wooden bow ties age beautifully.

4. Two birds. One stone.

Wooden bow ties and lapel flowers can be both a groomsman gift and their accessory for the wedding day. Especially with our custom back-engraving option, it is a keepsake for them to enjoy for years to come. To inspire your own creativity, one of the couples we worked with put together a neat ensemble for each of the groomsmen to enjoy using an old cigar box.

(Fortunately for those of us who enjoy taking less steps if we don’t have to, each of our bow ties and lapel flowers come in a unique magnetic box with our logo on it for premium presentation. We mention this as it isn’t necessary to take them out of their original packaging in order to gift wrap it, but it is completely up to you!)

5. Quality craftsmanship. Made in USA.

Each and every wooden bow tie and lapel flower we sell is made right here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Co-Founders, Tim and Adam, oversee every step of production and consider each product we send out to be a great representation of their own personal high quality craftsmanship. Supporting Two Guys Bow Tie Co. is supporting the hard-working men and women in our beautiful country.

With 20% off 5 or more items as our wedding gift to you, we can’t think of any reasons not to wear wooden accessories on your special day. Send us an email at [email protected] for your personal promo code or get answers to any questions you may have!

Hardwood Feature: Are You Bold Enough for Paduak Wood?

Posted by Lacey Wilcox on 10th Nov 2014

While Paduak may seem to be one of our less common hardwoods, in our opinion, it is one of the most distinctive. Paduak, which comes from the Pterocarpus tree, has long been valued for its strength and durability. This exotic hardwood is sourced from Africa and Asia.

Perhaps Paduak wood’s most striking characteristic is its deep red color. The lumber is typically a bright reddish orange when cut, and becomes more brown in tone the longer it is exposed to sunlight. We’re big fans of its rich hue and rugged texture.

Like its origins, the look of our Paduak ties is bold and a bit exotic. Our customers love it for the pop it adds to any wardrobe.

Hewn from a darker hue of Paduak, our Harold tie sports bold zigzags balanced by a mild grey centerpiece. Crafted with life-of-the-party men in mind, the Harold will make sure every outfit is a statement.

Our simple Raleigh lapel flower shows a more subtle side of Paduak. This rugged accent is the perfect companion to any suit or blazer, adding a splash of color to any formal event.

This design is a bullseye for the fashion-forward gentleman. Paduak serves as a bold backdrop for polka dots on our Blaise tie, a must-have for anyone looking to stand out from the crowd.

For a pairing too dapper to pass up, look no further than our Gene + Rochester combo. Both crafted from Paduak, this tie and lapel flower combo brings out the best and brightest in your fall and winter wardrobe. Wear together or separately for an equally handsome effect.

We’re looking for men bold enough to distinguish themselves with the bright and daring tones of Paduak wood. Will you accept this challenge?

African Zebrawood:

Posted by Lacey Wilcox on 1st Jul 2014

Sought out for its beautiful black and creamy striped grain, African Zebrawood is an instantly recognizable and popular choice of lumber among woodworkers. Its beautiful, contrasting pattern makes it the perfect backdrop for many pieces, and it has been found to grace tables, floors, books, drums, and even knife handles.

zebrawood

{Photo Credit}

The African Zebrawood is native to the forests of Southwest Cameroon. Its height is almost as distinguished as its grain: it can tower up to 40 meters above the trees surrounding it. Sometimes called Zebrano, African Zebrawood is strong and stiff. Its popularity, however, comes from its incredible, bold coloring.

{Photo Credit}

While hardwoods can often run together and begin to look the same, this exotic hardwood makes its mark. Its unique wood grain can appear in different ways, depending upon how it is sawn. In flat sawn zebrawood, the stripes will be wavy. In quarter sawn wood, the stripes will take on a much more uniform appearance.

This exotic hardwood is bold, beautiful, and distinct. In order to give the wood grain center stage, we sand it carefully, starting out with a lower grit paper and then moving up until we reach a perfect appearance. We finish it with teak oil to help the unique grain pattern stand out. Its striking pattern creates a bow tie worth remembering, as evidenced in our Clive wooden bow tie. In this wooden bow tie, we pair the striking black and cream pattern of the Zebrawood with a grey denim centerpiece. It creates a look that is almost as striking as the Zebrawood itself: subtle, yet distinct. It’s the perfect piece to dress up or down: a staple in any gentlemen’s wardrobe.

If the Clive isn’t for you, the Mr. T wooden bow tie is an attractive piece that features this exotic hardwood. Simple, striking, and easy on the eyes, the black and cream stripes of the African Zebrawood pair perfectly with a trendy brown leather piece. It’s a staple item that will never let you down. We pity the fool that doesn’t appreciate this piece.

Nataley Shepherd: Two Guys Bow Ties Production Manager and Office Manager

Posted by Lacey Wilcox on 10th Apr 2015

Nataley does it all at Two Guys Bow Ties. She’s been around since the company’s earliest days, when we crafted our handmade wooden accessories in our homes. She’s grown with Two Guys and considers it a great place for both her artistic design and leadership qualities to flourish. Read her story here:

nataley-1-2

2GBT: Tell us a little about yourself. What’s your background? What experiences do you think have helped to shape you to be so successful with Two Guys Bow Ties?

NS: Hi, I’m Nataley! Thanks to my super supportive parents I graduated college from Oklahoma Baptist University with a degree in Art and loved every minute of it, the art part that is.

I started off my college career as a Biology major pursuing a Veterinarian career; but after 2 years of science classes, I realized it wasn’t for me (thank you Lord). I have always loved to create and work with my hands so Art became my passion, and I spent the last 2 years of college weaving on a floor loom or getting messy with a pottery wheel.

Also, while at OBU I had the honor of being a team captain for the Varsity soccer team my senior year and I learned A LOT. A lot about cooperation, respect, authority, leadership, and what it really means to set a good example.

One month after graduating I got to marry my high school sweetheart, Kyle, and we have been married for just over 2 and a half years. We’ve been together a total of 9 years. Kyle joined the Marine Corps straight out of high school and served for 5 years while we were dating/engaged. Our long distance relationship taught me about appreciation, patience, communication, and the importance of good friends. I think the combination of mine and Kyle’s relationship; the best parents ever; science, art, and leadership have lead me to be a better and well rounded person and employee.

2GBT: What life experiences lead you to work at Two Guys Bow Ties?

NS: After I switched majors to Art, I was really struggling with what I was going to do with this degree. I searched for internships and landed on one for window and visual display at Anthropologie. I applied and met with the design coordinator Kara Paslay, and she hired me even though I had a sad little portfolio. She’s one of the most determined and creative people I’ve ever met. She taught me how to stretch my creativity and be confident about it. I learned A LOT.

The next summer, after I graduated, I reached out to Kara for work. She took me on as an assistant in the interior design business she created with her husband, Tim. That November, Tim and Adam started Two Guys Bow Ties and they needed bow tie makers, so I was hired on. I worked as a part time bow tie maker until the business started to take off and they hired me full time. I am so grateful they took time to teach me and let me grow with the company as a manager in training. It really makes me appreciate how far we’ve come.

2GBT: How would you describe your role at Two Guys Bow Ties?

NS: I manage the office and the production process. I get to keep a hand in most aspects of Two Guys Bow Ties and that’s probably what I like most—the diversity of my job. I understand how to make every product from start to finish; I oversee all shipping and receiving; I get to train awesome employees; I take care of office tasks; I’m the customer service rep; I work on our e-commerce platforms; and I act as Adam’s right hand ‘gal’. Additionally, I get to collaborate with Tim on designs. It has definitely taken some learning and training, but I’m so excited to be able to be all that here at this company.

2GBT: What’s your preferred work environment (setting, music, time of day, etc)?

NS: I’m a wanna-be morning person, so I like to think I’m going to be super productive in the mornings. But it’s probably more around 9:30 when I’m finally ready and excited for the day. I’m thankful my office is by a window because I need natural light, or I’ll think I’m in a cave and want to take a nap. For music, put on Ed Sheeran mixed with some T Swift and Katy Perry and I’m pumped (I know I’m a teenager).

2GBT: What’s it like being the only girl working with a shop full of guys?

NS: Thankfully I’ve got some awesome part-time girls that help even the ranks. I think we all work well together.

2GBT: While it might be difficult to make a hardwood accessory for men work for women, Two Guys has launched some fun women’s products this year. Which has been your favorite?

NS: It was really exciting creating some wooden accessories for women. My favorite is the reclaimed wood chevron necklace. The wood gives an ombre effect using white oak, walnut and rosewood; and it hangs long from a dainty chain. I usually wear it with a white shirt and a fun patterned cardigan.

2GBT: Of all the wooden bow ties and lapel flowers, do you have a personal favorite?

NS: There are so many to choose from I don’t know how guys ever decide; but, if I were a guy, I would probably be sporting the Mr. T. The Zebrawood is so bold and beautiful, and leather is one of my favorite things.

2GBT: What drives you or motivates you? What gets you up in the morning?

nataley-2-2

NS: There are lots of things that motivate me to get up in the morning. Mainly, I want to continue to learn and get better at my job and be successful, while helping Two Guys become more successful. I have connected with this company and feel like it’s my own, so I want to continue to stretch my limits here. I am also motivated by my husband who’s going through college now that he is out of the military. He is the most determined person I know, and I want to be his support by working and allowing him to focus on school.

2GBT: What is your favorite Two Guys Bow Ties memory?

NS: Probably the first month that I started working for TGBT. It was the first Christmas the company was around, and they had launched everything the month before. Me and 3 other girls were making bow ties like crazy in Adam’s home office. I think we made 600 ties in one very long day. It’s fun looking back on that day and seeing how much we’ve grown. We experienced a similar Christmas this last year. It was crazy busy. It was by far our busiest Christmas yet. It was really cool to watch and be able to remember back to our first Christmas. And, I’m not complaining, but it was pretty exhausting as well.

2GBT: Anything else about yourself that you would like to share ;)?

NS: I have 2 dog babies; Gunny and Roxy. They love Two Guys Bow Ties, and if they’re being good they get to come to work with me sometimes.

We love getting to work with you, Nataley.  Thanks for all you do for us!
